10th World Water Forum: Best in History

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo officially opened the 10th World Water Forum on Monday (20 May 2024) at the Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Nusa Dua, Bali. The organization of the world's largest water forum was recognized as the best in its history, leaving a memorable impression to heads of state, delegates, and participants who attended.

This was stated by the Public Works and Public Housing Minister's Special Advisor on Water Resources Management, Firdaus Ali, at a press conference at the 10th World Water Forum Media Center, Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), Monday (20 May).

“It’s the best water forum in history from its preparation to implementation. Many are impressed with its organization, especially since it is the first forum held after the COVID-19 pandemic," said Firdaus.

Not only are the preparation and implementation impressive, but Firdaus, also Chair of Division VI for Registration, Website, and Information System of the National Organizing Committee, hopes that this activity will have a tangible impact on providing solutions to water problems worldwide.

This is evident from four proposals from the Indonesian government, which will be pushed into becoming a joint agreement.

The four are the establishment of World Lake Day through a UN resolution, the establishment of the Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience, mainstreaming water management issues for small island developing countries, and recording a list of water projects as a Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions that are inclusive but voluntary.

The Compendium will contain a list of projects, initiatives, and collaborations managed by national, regional, and international water stakeholders. Indonesia will also prepare an online submission platform.

"If Indonesia can push for the proposal for World Lake Day to be ratified, this will also be a historic event we make together. Lakes have a vital role in maintaining global water availability, so they must be managed well," said Firdaus.

On the other hand, the 10th World Water Forum also emphasizes the importance of ensuring the availability and security of water for human life as a whole. It will also involve food security and mitigating disaster risks due to climate change.

"The most crucial thing is ensuring water security because there is no food security without it. If food security does not exist, world civilization will be threatened. So, this forum is an extremely important meeting on how we can collaborate to find solutions to water problems, guarantee water availability, maintain water security, and not making water a source of conflict," he concluded.
