10th World Water Forum Produces Ministerial Declaration
The 10th World Water Forum, taking place from 18—25 May 2024 in Nusa Dua, Bali, produced a Ministerial Declaration that highlights three priorities.
The Ministerial Declaration was adopted at the conclusion of the 10th World Water Forum Ministerial Meeting which was attended by 106 countries and 27 International Organizations.
Minister of Public Works and Housing and Chief Operating Officer of the National Organizing Committee (NOC) of the 10th World Water Forum Basuki Hadimuljono spoke on the meeting’s outcome at the Media Center, Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), Tuesday (21 May).
The first priority is the establishment of a center of excellence on water and climate resilience for capacity building, knowledge sharing, and utilization of superior facilities.
“As an archipelagic country, Indonesia should be on the frontline to drive innovation in water management and sanitation. The center of excellence is not only for Indonesia but also for other countries in the Asia Pacific,” he said.
Since November 2023, he added, deliberation on the declaration has been conducted through three mechanisms at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. In the declaration, Indonesia emphasizes three priorities.
According to Basuki, President of the World Water Council (WWC) Loic Fauchon has stated that the whole process is a diplomatic victory for Indonesia.
The second point from the Ministerial Declaration is to raise and promote the issue of integrated water resources management on small islands. Although it is surrounded by vast bodies of water, Indonesia still requires an excellent management system for overcoming challenges related to quality and availability of clean water.
Third, proposal of the World Lake Day. Lakes are significant water resources that contribute to the livelihood of the people while having social and economic functions for society. The World Lake Day will not only be commemorated symbolically but also serves as one the main keys to preserving the sustainability of lakes worldwide.
“We must conserve lakes to extend their lifespans. This is the aim of commemorating the World Lake Day,” he added.
Basuki went on to say that there are three points that distinguish the 10th World Water Forum in Bali from previous events.
First, it is the only time that a World Water Forum has held a summit level meeting, which was officially opened by President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, on Monday (20 May).
Second, the Forum produced its first Ministerial Declaration.
In the meantime, Coordinating Minister for Maritime
and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar said that guests were impressed by the
organization of the 10th World Water Forum in Indonesia.
“Global leaders who visited Tahura (Grand Forest Park) also expressed admiration for Indonesia's progress. The President of Fiji even stated that he wouldn't believe it if he hadn't witnessed Indonesia's progress firsthand,” Luhut remarked. (Kemlu/Elvira Inda Sari/TR/RA/PR)
