10th World Water Forum, Moment to Promote Fair and Equitable Water Management

Fair and equitable global water management is one of the important issues at the 10th World Water Forum which will soon be held on 18 – 25 May 2024 in Bali.

Chair of Secretariat of the National Organizing Committee for the 10th World Water Forum and Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH), Mohammad Zainal Fatah, said that the forum is a moment for Indonesia to demonstrate its commitment to global efforts in addressing water management challenges.

"This forum is an opportunity for countries to share experiences, innovations, and solutions in water resources management and conservation, especially the impacts of climate change that are increasingly evident," said Zainal, Friday, 10 May 2024.

The forum, themed "Water for Shared Prosperity," consists of three main processes: political process, regional process, and thematic process involving all relevant stakeholders. The thematic process comprises six sub-themes to be collectively discussed to find global solutions.

These six sub-themes include water security and prosperity, water for humans and nature, disaster risk reduction and management, governance, cooperation and hydro-diplomacy, sustainable water finance, and knowledge and innovation.

Meanwhile, the regional process covers Asia Pacific, America, Africa, and the Mediterranean. The political process consists of five levels: head of states, parliament, ministers, local authorities, and basin authorities.

“Every country has its own water management issues and focuses. Therefore, a comprehensive regional approach is necessary. For the political process, water management policies will be discussed at various levels, from the implementation level to the Head of State," said Zainal.

Meanwhile, Chair of Division VI: Registration, Website, and Information System of the National Organizing Committee for the 10th World Water Forum and Special Advisor to the Minister of Public Works and Housing on Water Resources Management Firdaus Ali added, Indonesia will also bring the spirit of peace in water diplomacy or hydro-diplomacy.

The dialogue that Indonesia will develop in the forum will uphold dignity and provide solutions to problems.

"The 10th World Water Forum is a monumental meeting to transform all policies, spirits, and enthusiasm, so that together we will face the future, making water a source of life and peace, instead of source of conflict and disaster," he said.

The forum, initiated together by the Indonesian Government and the World Water Council (WWC), will also encourage four proposals expected to become mutual agreements, namely the establishment of the Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience (COE), mainstreaming of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) on Small Islands, the establishment of World Lake Day (WLD), and the inclusion of a list of concrete deliverables and actions in the Ministerial Declaration Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions.
