10th World Water Forum Opens Up Investment Opportunities for Water Infrastructure Development

The 10th World Water Forum, which will be held from 18 to 25 May 2024 in Bali, is expected to generate investment opportunities for the development of water infrastructure.

Nani Hendiarti, Deputy for Coordination of Environmental and Forestry Management at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, said this in a statement issued on Sunday, 5 May 2024, in Jakarta.

According to Nani, to attain the goal of providing safe, equitable, and affordable drinking water to all by 2030, investments in drinking water pipes are necessary.

Meanwhile, the investment growth rate for new drinking water pipelines is approximately 20.6%. To raise the investment by 30%, a total of Rp123 trillion in expenditures is required.

The State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) can only accommodate 37% of water infrastructure funding needs. As a result, investment must be promoted as a source of capital.

“The 10th World Water Forum will be attended by numerous countries. This forum should be able to draw new investment in water infrastructure,” she said.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing Mohammad Zainal Fatah stated that Indonesia will offer several strategic water-related projects totaling US$9.6 billion (Rp154 trillion) at the 10th World Water Forum.

The project lists are presently being selected and compiled by the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN/Bappenas).

“This has integrated numerous proposals totaling US$9.6 billion in the form of projects, including both ongoing and new ones of which funding is already included,” he said.

The 10th World Water Forum's central theme is "Water for Shared Prosperity." This theme aligns with the global commitment to finding solutions for enhancing and managing sustainable water resources in response to unpredictable climate change.

In addition, a subtheme titled "Sustainable Water Financing" will explore the issue of financing mechanisms for sustainable drinking water, encompassing not only governmental but also corporate contributions. (Ridho Syukra/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/SC/PR)
