10th World Water Forum Empowers Youth in Global Climate Change Mitigation

The younger generation is urged to seize the opportunity of the 10th World Water Forum to actively participate in mitigating the impacts of climate change related disasters. This aligns with the primary goal of the forum held in Bali from May 18 to 25, 2024, which is to strengthen Indonesia's role in addressing the challenges of climate change, water, and their impacts on vital sectors.

This statement was made by the Special Advisor to the Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) for Water Resources, Firdaus Ali, on Sunday (28 April 2024).

The Ministry of PUPR, in its water-related activities, both nationally and internationally, involves young people. This includes encouraging their real participation in the 10th World Water Forum.

"Young people also organize a series of seminars, webinars, and participate in competitions in the field. We also invite them to forums abroad, introducing them to young people from other countries," said Firdaus Ali.

At the forum, youth are engaged in discussing, collaborating, and seeking solutions to current and future water issues.

"The Indonesian government involves the younger generation in efforts to find solutions to the challenges and threats of the global water crisis," he said.

Previously, during the Coordination Meeting for the Preparation of the Tenth World Water Forum in Bali last week, Head of Program Division I and National Committee Session Organizer of the Tenth World Water Forum and also Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati, emphasized the active participation of Indonesian youth because they are the nation's future generation.

"The main objective is to strengthen Indonesia's leadership and role as the host, because it will be the youth who will experience the impacts, both in terms of mitigation and handling of water and climate issues and their impacts on the environment, disasters, food, energy, and health," said Dwikorita.

Furthermore, she revealed that in order to elevate the role of youth, the Bali Youth Plan agenda titled Voice of the Youth is proposed to be a significant part of the opening or closing. It is hoped that they will inspire young generations to participate in voicing global challenges related to water and climate.

"It is hoped that Voice of the Youth can formulate the thoughts of young people at the global level and provide recommendations for the future," said Dwikorita.

In addition to the Bali Youth Plan, the Tenth World Water Forum has also set several targets to achieve tangible results that can have a positive impact on global water resource management. Among these targets are the establishment of Centers of Excellence for Climate and Water Resilience, forming working groups for integrated water resource management on small islands, and inaugurating World Lake Day.

"All these efforts are aimed at producing a Compendium of Concrete Deliverables that can provide concrete solutions to address water challenges at the global level," she said.

Several programs for the youth session are summarized in the Bali Youth Plan, including the #ShareWaterStories campaign, Youth Podcast: Water Talk, Young Water Sustainability Leaders (YWSL) 2024, Youth Book, and Final Youth Activities.

YWSL 2024 previously held an Online Bootcamp involving 300 young participants from around the world. Sixty of them were selected as young delegates to the Tenth World Water Forum, coming from Asia, Africa, Europe, America, and Oceania.

The World Water Forum is the world's largest international water forum held every three years since 1997. Indonesia is the third country in Asia, after Japan and South Korea, to be selected as the host. The forum will bring together world leaders, government representatives, multilateral institutions, politicians, academics, business leaders, and young people to collaborate in voicing ideas and solutions for sustaining water resources worldwide.
