10th World Water Forum to be Opened with Traditional Balinese Rituals

Indonesia being chosen as the host for the 10th World Water Forum is a pride and a milestone in the history of the largest water forum event in the world after the COVID-19 pandemic. The event, which will take place in Nusa Dua, Bali, on 18-25 May 2024, will also introduce the diversity of Indonesian culture, especially Bali, to the participants.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, explained that one of the cultural diversity that will be displayed is the melukat procession or Balinese Water Purification Ceremony, which is a typical Balinese traditional ritual with the concept of the Rahina Tumpek Uye and the Segara Kerthi Ceremony as a form of gratitude and honor for animals that have helped human lives and purification of water.

"The main support that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will provide is to facilitate delegates to experience the melukat procession, which specifically has spiritual meaning for the Balinese people. This melukat procession will later involve the regional government," said Sandiaga in his statement on Wednesday (1 May).

He further revealed that the Indonesian Government, as the host, was fully committed to preparing the 10th World Water Forum optimally. It is expected that the delegates or participants who attend will be able to record sweet moments outside the important discussion forum regarding the sustainability of world water resources issues.

"And we will prepare several locations for the side event procession," said Sandiaga.

At a different time, Deputy Chair of the Secretariat of the 10th World Water Forum National Organizing Committee and Expert Staff to the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing for Technology, Industry, and the Environment, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, again explained the mechanism for the 10th World Water Forum meeting was divided into three main processes, namely political processes, thematic processes, and regional processes. These three processes involve various stakeholders, such as state leaders, ministers, regional leaders, academics, researchers, and the younger generation, who will exchange ideas with each other.

"There are will be 230 thematic forum sessions, 55 side events, and 10 special sessions in this event. Apart from that, the Indonesian government also invited heads of state, heads of international institutions, and ministers or ministerial level responsible for water resources issues," said Endra.

The series of events for the 10th World Water Forum opened with the Balinese Water Purification Ceremony, a typical Balinese traditional ritual with the Rahina Tumpek Uye activity and the Segara Kerthi Ceremony. On 20 May the event will continue with an Opening Ceremony and High-Level Panels at BICC, Nusa Dua. After that, there were interface meetings with those responsible for political, thematic, and regional processes and bilateral meetings with several heads of state.

Still, on the same day, the opening of the Fair and Expo will be held at the Nusa Dua BNDCC Hall. Furthermore, the Fair and Expo locations will be spread across BNDCC, BICC, and Kuta Beach. Political, thematic, and regional process sessions will be held on 20-25 May. Meanwhile, the High-Level Meeting and Ministerial Meeting will be held on 20-21 May.

Next, a Cultural Night (Farewell) agenda is scheduled to be held at Taman Bhagawan on 24 May. Guests can enjoy traditional food, regional dances, and Indonesian culture. Meanwhile, the closing of the event will take place on 25 May. After the series of World Water Forum activities are concluded, participants will also be taken on a field trip to enjoy the beauty of Bali, such as the Water Museum in Tabanan, Jatiluwih UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Batur Kintamani, and Ubud Cultural Village.
