European Union Expresses Appreciation to Indonesia for Water Roadmap Concern

Water crises and various environmental issues concern almost all countries worldwide. Likewise, the European Union faces issues related to water resources management, biodiversity, and environmental preservation.

According to the European Union, a water roadmap is necessary to achieve a sustainable life and maintain water and food security. The roadmap is related to green and blue water.

The European Commission’s Director-General of the Environment Department Florika Fink-Hooijer made the statement in her remarks as a keynote speaker in the 10th World Water Forum thematic process discussion session under the theme “Water Resources Management Across Borders, Basins, and Scales from Source to Sea” in Legian 6 Room at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) in Nusa Dua, Bali, Monday, 20 May.

“I am glad that Indonesia mentioned the importance of establishing a water roadmap, but we must also have a government structure that properly manages water resources. We must all pay attention to biodiversity and water policies,” she said.

Fink-Hooijer pointed out that unclean water and clean water that cannot be directly consumed are still found in many places. In addition, water is also contaminated by pollutants, affecting drinking water and basins.

“We have various regulations in the European Union. We should coordinate and streamline them, including [regulations on] water management using marine technology. However, good international coordination and collaboration are also crucial. We must also have good qualitative status and quality from various water agencies,” she said.

This session was followed by panel sessions featuring several speakers. A speaker from the Asian Development Bank discussed the programs they have carried out related to water resources management.

This panel is expected to be a platform for participants and representatives of organizations from all over the world to share and learn from each other, especially about the challenges they face, good practices, as well as effective and successful programs that can be adapted in other regions.

The six subthemes of the thematic process session are water security and prosperity; water for humans and nature; disaster risk reduction and management; governance, cooperation, and hydro-diplomacy; sustainable water finance; and knowledge and innovation.
