President of Indonesia Emphasizes Three Important Points at Bilateral Meeting with President of Fiji

President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and President of Fiji Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum meeting at the Bali International Convention Center (BICC), Nusa Dua, Monday, 20 May 2024. The two leaders agreed to continuously enhance mutually beneficial and concrete cooperation.

"As fellow Pacific countries, Fiji is an important brother and partner for Indonesia in making the Pacific a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region. We also need to strengthen concrete and mutually beneficial cooperation," said President Jokowi.

During the meeting, the President of the Republic of Indonesia emphasized three important points. First, regarding partnership development, President Jokowi hoped that the regional agricultural training centre in Rakiraki can be utilized to advance research, innovation, and partnerships that contribute to food security.

"This is so that in the future Fiji can become a hub for agricultural development in the Pacific region," said President Jokowi.

Second, regarding people-to-people cooperation, President Jokowi expressed appreciation for the launch of the Fiji-Indonesia Friendship Association Forum last March. "I believe that Your Excellency's support will further strengthen people-to-people relations between our two countries," he added.

Third, related to cooperation in the Pacific, President Jokowi affirmed Indonesia's commitment to continuously voicing the aspirations and interests of the Pacific at various forums. Indonesia is also committed to fostering cooperation, especially through the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) based on the principle of mutual respect, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"I appreciate Fiji's consistency in respecting Indonesia's sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as its support for Indonesia's role in the Pacific," he said.

Meanwhile, the President of Fiji expressed his admiration for Indonesia's transformation, especially under President Jokowi's leadership. "We have much to learn from you," said the President of Fiji, adding that this meeting is an important moment for bilateral relations that have lasted for 50 years.

This meeting marked an enhancement of collaboration between the two countries in maintaining stability and prosperity in the Pacific region.

Also accompanying President Jokowi at the meeting were Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi, State Secretary Minister Pratikno, and Investment Minister/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Head Bahlil Lahadalia. (BPMI/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/ug/MB)
