President Jokowi Scheduled to Attend 10th World Water Forum in Bali

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is confirmed to be present at the opening of the world's largest water forum meeting, the 10th World Water Forum, slated to be held on 18--25 May 2024 in Nusa Dua, Bali.

This was stated by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, in Badung, Bali on Tuesday (14 May).

As a commitment to addressing water and sanitation issues, Indonesia at the 10th World Water Forum will also realize cooperation with the government of the United Arab Emirates though groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of International Mangrove Research Center (IMRC) on Kura Kura Island.

“The President will be present, the detailed agenda is all prepared. There’ll be a groundbreaking ceremony on Kura Kura Island," said Luhut.

Luhut also revealed that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Elon Musk, who will also present at the World Water Forum, will inaugurate the Starlink satellite-based internet service on Sunday (19 May). This service will reach all regions in Indonesia, especially the disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost areas (3T).

"Elon Musk will also speak at the opening of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali," said Luhut.

For information, the International Mangrove Research Center (IMRC) aims to help improve research, innovation, and exchange of knowledge regarding mangroves at the global level. This initiative is in line with the Mangrove Breakthrough agreed at the COP28 World Climate Action Summit on 2 December 2023.

The establishment of IMRC in Bali is expected to support various mangrove restoration and conservation initiatives in Indonesia, such as the Mangrove for Coastal Resilience project, which focuses on strengthening policies and institutions in managing and rehabilitating mangroves sustainably and increasing various livelihood opportunities for coastal communities.

Luhut said that IMRC's groundbreaking, which took the moment of the 10th World Water Forum, is indeed a milestone to show the world the commitment and actual contributions that have been made, especially in water resource management. Through this largest water forum in the world, Indonesia is expected to become a role model for other countries because of its success in managing water resources.

Indonesia is the third country in Asia after Japan and South Korea to host the 10th World Water Forum. This water forum will present three main processes, namely thematic, regional, and political processes, as well as six sub-themes, which are in line with the results of discussions at the World Water Conference in New York in 2023.
