World Water Forum in Bali Generates Rp1.5 Trillion Economic Turnover

Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister/Tourism and Creative Economy Agency Head Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno confirmed that the 10th World Water Forum, running until 25 May, in Nusa Dua, Bali, will have a huge impact on Bali's economy.

In his statement on Thursday, 23 May, the Minister said that 50,000 tourists have arrived in Bali for the 10th World Water Forum.

"For an event like this, a delegate spends around Rp34 million. Therefore, we expect more than half a trillion rupiah, or Rp500 billion, in direct spending for the Bali and Indonesian economy from this World Water Forum," said the Minister.

Minister Sandi said calculations showed the overall economic impact might reach Rp1.5 trillion in the future. "There are other economic activities beyond the direct spending of the delegates, considering they often don’t come alone," he said.

On that occasion, the Minister also highlighted the greater impact of Indonesia's international leadership in promoting sustainable water resource management.

"This will be followed by around 100 to 120 projects, which we estimate could lead to derivative and follow-on investments totaling around Rp120 trillion over the next five to ten years," he said.

Minister Sandiaga also pointed out that the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry is surveying stakeholders, visitors, and delegates from 17 to 25 May to assess the impact of hosting the 10th World Water Forum in Bali.

He also mentioned that from a promotional standpoint, hosting the 2024 World Water Forum offered effective destination exposure for Bali.

In the past month, searches for the "World Water Forum" have seen a significant increase, with over 1,800 daily searches, 45 percent of which originate from overseas, including the Pacific region, East Asia, South Asia, Western Europe, Africa, North America, and South America. In the last week alone, there were 190 news stories, both globally and nationally that covered the World Water Forum.

The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry is committed to organizing sustainable MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events. This means that the focus is not solely on economic aspects but also on social and environmental considerations.

Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Badung Regency chapter’s chair I Gusti Agung Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya previously underlined that the 10th World Water Forum would significantly benefit the growth of the tourism sector and the creative economy. One notable impact is seen in the accommodation sector, where hotel occupancy rates in Bali, particularly in the Nusa Dua area, are exceptionally high.

"The international MICE events hosting will have a significant impact. This will surely be a blessing for Bali," he said.

He revealed that hotel occupancy rate in the Nusa Dua area, where the conference is being held, has reached 100 percent. This surge in occupancy extends beyond Nusa Dua, impacting hotels in surrounding areas, such as Jimbaran, Kuta, Sanur, and Ubud.

Echoing the same sentiment, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, chair of Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association’s (PHRI) Bali Governing Body, highlighted that selecting Bali as the venue for the World Water Forum not only directly impacts hotel occupancy rates in Bali, particularly in the Nusa Dua area but also promotes Bali as the world’s favorite tourism destination.

"As the chair of Bali PHRI, I hope future events like the World Water Forum will be held in Bali," he remarked.

The 10th World Water Forum carries the theme "Water for Shared Prosperity." It resonates with the prevailing global circumstances, wherein the accessibility of clean water remains a significant challenge for many countries. (Biro Komunikasi Kemenparekraf/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/RF/Flow)
