10th World Water Forum Parliamentary Meeting Reaffirms Commitment to Water

The Representative of the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani underscored the parliament’s commitment and readiness to support all water resilience agendas. Water issues will be the priority of the Indonesian parliament and parliamentary diplomacy.

“This forum serves as an opportunity to show Indonesia’s commitment to maintaining and managing water for prosperity to the world,” Puan said at the opening of the Parliamentary Meeting on the occasion of the 10th World Water Forum at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Monday, 20 May.

The Parliamentary Meeting of the 10th World Water Forum adopted the theme “Mobilizing Parliamentary Action on Water for Shared Prosperity.” Through this theme, members of parliaments across the globe will have the opportunity to take action to overcome the water crisis and scarcity.

According to Puan Maharani, several substantive issues will be discussed at the global parliamentary meeting. One of these is water as the key to achieving sustainable development, considering the water issue is part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda.

Furthermore, the meeting will also discuss innovative practices for inclusive and equitable water access; water as the core of climate action and water diplomacy; cooperation; and science for peace.

On the same occasion, the World Water Council President Loïc Fauchon stressed that fighting for efforts to make water a facility towards shared prosperity is necessary. Loïc invited everyone to become Water Warriors to make water a source of prosperity. “I invite everyone to be Water Warriors, especially the Indonesian people,” he said.

Afterward, the parliamentary meeting will hold the first plenary session under the theme “Access to water and sanitation.” Puteri Komaruddin, a DPR member, will moderate this session. Meanwhile, the speakers will be the UN-Water chief technical advisor Federico Properzi and the African Civil Society Network for Water and Sanitation (ANEW) executive secretary Sareen Malik.

The Parliamentary Meeting is part of the political session of the 10th World Water Forum. The forum will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali from 18 to 25 May under the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity”.

The Forum’s six subthemes are water security and prosperity; water for humans and nature; disaster risk reduction and management; governance, cooperation, and hydro-diplomacy; sustainable water finance; and knowledge and innovation. (Yandi/Ayu Sulistyowati/Senja/Elvira Inda Sari/Dida/Flo)
