Indonesian Home Minister Highlights 3 Crucial Points at 10th World Water Forum.

Indonesian Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian underscored three crucial points at the 10th Ministerial Meeting of the World Water Forum at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on 20 May.

The first was to ensure solidarity and inclusiveness among countries and water-related stakeholders. The Minister highlighted that the 10th World Water Forum must encourage innovative efforts to ensure water sustainability.

“We must continue to ensure effective integrated water resources management, as well as provide access to clean and safe drinking water and proper sanitation,” said Minister Tito when chairing the meeting.

The second was to build synergy in various water management processes. For this reason, he called for the involvement of stakeholders at all levels, namely international, such as the United Nations (UN), regional, national, and local. These processes will ensure the concrete implementation of global water-related targets and goals, including the acceleration of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The third was to direct political commitment to produce tangible results. The Minister was urging governments worldwide to turn discussion into meaningful actions. The success of current and future discussions hinged on robust policymaking and unwavering dedication to water solutions.

“Therefore, the 10th World Water Forum should serve as a guiding light, leading us towards inclusive, impactful, and mutually beneficial cooperation to safeguard future generations,” he said.

He also mentioned that addressing water issues was not solely the responsibility of professionals and academics, but also policymakers, highlighting the political nature of water.

“This is a critical moment for humanity, as governments need to demonstrate solidarity and collaborate in addressing the water crisis,” he underscored.

Previously, at the opening ceremony of the 10th World Water Forum, President Joko Widodo expressed that it was an honour for Indonesia to be chosen as the host for the event. He emphasized the forum's significance as a platform to strengthen collective commitment and develop practical strategies for inclusive and sustainable water management.

The President stressed the importance of effective water management, highlighting that water is indispensable for food security, peace, and the sustenance of life itself. Every drop of water is invaluable and must be carefully conserved.

With 65 percent of its area covered by water, Indonesia is known for its rich local wisdom in water management. Indonesians from the coastline through the riverbanks to lakesides have a strong water culture. One example is the Balinese subak water irrigation system which has been practiced since the eleventh century and is recognized as a world cultural heritage.

President Joko Widodo also emphasized that for the Balinese water holds spiritual and cultural significance and should be collectively managed. This aligns with the theme of the 10th World Water Forum, “Water for Shared Prosperity,” which underscores the principles of avoiding competition, prioritizing equality and inclusive cooperation, and supporting peace and shared prosperity.

It is worth noting that the 10th World Water Forum was attended by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the World Water Council (WWC) President Loïc Fauchon. (Puspen Kemendagri/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/ZT/Flo)
