Indonesia Proposes a Centre of Excellence as Solution to Climate Challenges

Jakarta, 23 April 2024 - Indonesia will propose the establishment of a Centre of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali to be held on 18-25 May 2024. The goal is to deal with water governance challenges due to climate change.

"This Centre of Excellence (COE) is the answer to the climate challenges we now face in the world," said Advisor for Technology, Industry and Environment to the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Endra S. Atmawidjaja, Tuesday (23/4/2024).

Endra said that in establishing the COE, Indonesia would target the strengthening of South-South Cooperation (SSC).

Through the COE, Endra said that Southern countries that have problems related to flooding, sediment due to eruptions that damage rivers, and other water management problems will educate each other, exchange ideas, and share experiences to find the best solutions that can be implemented.

Endra highlighted the existence of Sabo Training Centre located in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, which can be part of the COE in the future.

By developing Sabo further, Endra believes Yogyakarta can become a place of learning for countries in the South regarding water management and climate resilience.

"We hope that, not too long after WWF, maybe a year after WWF, this Centre of Excellence will be realized," said Endra.

The 10th World Water Forum focused on four things, namely water conservation, clean water and sanitation, food and energy security, and mitigation of natural disasters.

A total of 244 sessions in the forum are expected to provide concrete results on mainstreaming integrated water resources management (IWRM) on small islands, the establishment of a centre of excellence or best practices for water and climate resilience (COE), and the establishment of World Lakes Day.

The Government of Indonesia invited 43 ambassadors and 4 international organizations to participate and make the 10th World Water Forum which will be held in Bali on 18-25 May 2024 a success. (Putu Indah Savitri, Nusarina Yuliastuti / Elvira Inda Sari / TR)
