Indonesia to Showcase Good Practices for Addressing Lake Toba Pollution at 10th World Water Forum

Indonesia will showcase good practices in efforts to address pollution in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali on 18–25 May 2024.

In the efforts to addressing pollution, the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH) has built a network of  pipes for wastewater treatment (IPAL) in Parapat, which connects two regions, Parapat in Simalungun Regency and Ajibata in Toba Regency.

The IPAL network construction aims to prevent water pollution in Lake Toba and to support tourism development in the area, which President Joko Widodo has designated as one of the five Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP).

According to MPWH Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, the North Sumatra Regional Settlement Infrastructure Agency (BPPW) has started construction of the Parapat IPAL network from September 2020, with a budget of Rp59.42 billion.

This infrastructure development will ensure that domestic wastewater from households and hotels does not pollute Lake Toba.

“Preventing water pollution in Lake Toba is a good practice that can be highlighted at the 10th World Water Forum,” said Basuki in a statement on Friday (17 May).

The constructed Parapat IPAL network starts from Sisingamangaraja Street, Sosor Saba Terminal, and Anggarajim Street. Then, it enters the Pantai Bebas IPAL. The IPAL is then processed in the riverbank area of Sijambur Ajibata, adjacent to facultative ponds, maturation ponds, and sludge drying beds.

The 10th World Water Forum will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, with the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity.” The forum will cover several subthemes, including Water Security and Prosperity, Water for Humans and Nature, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Governance, Cooperation and Hydro-diplomacy, Sustainable Water Finance, as well as Knowledge and Innovation.
