Indonesia Showcases Mangrove Conservation to 2024 World Water Forum Delegates

President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko “Jokowi” Widodo dan leaders of the 10th World Water Forum member countries visited Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura), Bali, on Monday (20 May 2024).

Tahura is a place for rehabilitating and conserving mangrove. This area implements the Balinese teaching principle of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes the balance of relationships between God, humans, and the environment.

Unlike in the G20 Summit 2022, this time the President and WWF-10 countries leaders did not plant mangrove seedling in person but handed it to the children, symbolizing the next generation to continue efforts of environment conservation.

“The handing of seedling and the planting process at Tahura reflects our joint commitment to enhance cooperation and affirm concrete action in global development,” President Joko Widodo said.

President Jokowi also invited all delegates to enter mangrove planting area located along the estuary, which is supported by solar power technology.

Solar power technology is installed in that facility to provide electricity in some mangrove conservation areas.

The implementation of solar power in Ngurah Rai Tahura is based on Cirata solar panel project, a joint project between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, which was previously launched in West Java province.

The 10th World Water Forum upholds the theme "Water for Shared Prosperity," reflecting concrete realization of Indonesia's and the world's commitment to addressing climate change through concrete actions in green economic development and sustainable environmental conservation.

Mangrove planted in Ngurah Rai Tahura is deemed important to support ecosystem and people’s prosperity, to filter and regulate freshwater cycle, and to serve as a solution to address climate change and biodiversity loss.

President Jokowi underscored mangrove huge potential in absorbing and storing carbon 4-5 times higher than regular forest, and improving coastal communities' livelihoods.

The rearrangement of Tahura Mangrove Forest was inaugurated by President Jokowi in February 2023, along with the inauguration of Danu Kerthi Tamblang Dam in Buleleng regency.

On that occasion, President Jokowi and World Water Forum countries leaders also witnessed and received information about Cirata Solar Panel project which is dubbed as the largest floating solar power in Southeast Asia. (Kemlu/Elvira Inda Sari/TR/RA/PR)
