Indonesia Introduces Modular Weir Technology at 10th World Water Forum

The Indonesian government will highlight the effective implementation of modular weir technology at the 10th World Water Forum, which will take place from 18 to 25 May in Bali. The Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH) developed this technology to enhance irrigation productivity, ensuring water supply and food security.

Basuki Hadimuljono, MPWH Minister and Chief Operating Officer of the 10th World Water Forum’s National Organizing Committee, stated that water infrastructure development required innovation and technology. This is consistent with the objective of the 10th World Water Forum, which is to achieve water for shared prosperity.

“The use of suitable, effective, and environmentally friendly technologies is pushed to create additional value and sustainable growth so that future generations can reap the benefits of infrastructure,” Minister Basuki said on Monday, 13 May, in Jakarta.

Modular weir technology is an easier, cheaper, and faster alternative to constructing weirs. The construction process can reduce dependence on heavy equipment in installing formwork, making it easier to implement this innovation in remote areas with limited road access.

James Zulfan, one of the researchers on modular weir technology and a senior engineer for the Water Hydraulics and Geotechnical Office of the MPWH Ministry, explained that this technology employed locked concrete block modules designed for field use to reduce construction costs and time by 40 percent.

“Modular weirs, like Lego, have the same strength and function as traditional weirs,” said James, as cited on the Ministry of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform official website on Monday, 13 May.

This innovation, which has been registered and granted a patent by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, is still being developed and collaborated with labor-intensive programs. The first Modular Weir prototype was constructed in 2013 on the Cikarang River in West Java Province. The innovation was used on the Kalisade River in West Nusa Tenggara Province in 2016 and on the Gugubali River in Morotai, North Maluku in 2019. (Firda Puri/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/SC/Flo)
