Indonesia to Introduce Community-Based Drinking Water Provision Program at 10th World Water Forum

The Indonesian government will introduce the Community-Based Drinking Water (Pamsimas) and Sanitation Provision (Sanimas) Program as one of the best practices at the 10th World Water Forum, which will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from 18 to 25 May 2024.

Chief Operating Officer of the National Organizing Committee for the 10th World Water Forum and Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, explained that the government has been implementing the Pamsimas program for 15 years, making it highly relevant to be highlighted at the forum.

“Pamsimas is a program that operates with strong dedication. Its main target is areas lacking water, so it would not be appropriate to place it in areas with abundant water,” Minister Basuki said in a statement on Thursday (9 May).

Pamsimas and Sanimas are tangible examples of community empowerment in the collective provision, management, and maintenance of clean water, with full support from the central government in infrastructure development and funding.

“This program establishes collaboration between the central and local governments to successfully provide adequate clean water while also addressing the challenges of stunting, even in remote villages,” said Diana Kusumastuti, PUPR Ministry’s Director General of Human Settlements.

Diana stated that Indonesia is committed to promoting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of these goals is to ensure access to safe and sustainable drinking water and sanitation for all.

To achieve this target, the government aligns the SDGs goals with the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024. This target mandates achieving 90% access to proper sanitation, including 15% of households having access to safe sanitation, and reducing the rate of open defecation to 0% by the end of 2024.

“The 10th World Water Forum is expected to serve as an opportunity to exchange strategies and best practices between Indonesia and other countries while also providing an opportunity to improve the steps taken to achieve the established targets,” said Diana. She added that the forum in Bali is expected to foster international cooperation related to efforts to ensure access to drinking water and sanitation.

The forum will coordinate efforts toward tangible solutions through prioritized political and regional policies to achieve the objectives and overarching theme of the 10th World Water Forum: Water for Shared Prosperity. (Firda Puri/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/WW)
