Indonesia-UAE Cooperate on Marine Plastic Waste Handling

The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment and the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MSP) on Reducing Plastic Waste Leakage into the Sea in Indonesia.

"The signing of the MSP is an important milestone in cooperation between Indonesia and PEA on Reducing Plastic Waste Leakage into the Sea. This agreement represents a joint commitment to environmental management," said Deputy of Environmental Management and Forestry, Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment Nani Hendiarti in a statement in Jakarta, Wednesday (24 April 2024).

On the Indonesian side, the signing was done by the Deputy of Environmental Management and Forestry, Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment Nani Hendiarti. The UAE was represented by Deputy Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mohammed Saeed Sultan Alnuami. The signing was carried out in Abu Dhabi, Tuesday (23 April 2024).

Nani said that Indonesia, with its vast coastline and vast archipelago, is aware of the important challenges posed by plastic pollution, which is a transboundary problem.

She said since implementing the national action on handling marine debris in 2018, Indonesia has succeeded in reducing plastic waste leakage by 42 percent from the goal of achieving a reduction of 70 percent.

"We are improving infrastructure, leveraging technology, and driving behavioural change across communities," she added, noting that support from the UAE is essential in strengthening environmental initiatives.

The signing of the MoU, continued Deputy Nani, further confirmed Indonesia's commitment with global support in calling for reducing plastic waste leakage into the sea.

A commitment to unite businesses, governments, and NGOs in calling for a 60 percent reduction in plastic production and the ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for future generations.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) Global Conference which took place in Abu Dhabi 23--25 April 2024 and was also attended by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno.

On that occasion, the Deputy of Environmental Management and Forestry extended an invitation to the UAE government to attend the 10th World Water Forum which will take place on 18--25 May 2024 in Bali.

As part of the activities of the World Water Forum, Deputy Nani said that a groundbreaking ceremony was being prepared for the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Mangrove Research Center – Joko Widodo (MBZ - Joko Widodo IMRC).

"Currently, this groundbreaking activity has been scheduled for May 19, 2024. The IMRC's MBZ-Joko Widodo will mark another important moment in collaborative efforts related to climate action," Nani said. (M. Harianto/Ahmad Wijaya/TR/Elvira Inda Sari)
