Indonesia Maximizes Water Management for Tourism Sector

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Creative Economy Agency, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, emphasized that Indonesia continues to make collaborative efforts to maximize water management in the tourism sector for the community’s welfare.

Sandiaga conveyed this while attending the 10th World Water Forum opening ceremony, which President Joko Widodo officially opened at Mangupura Hall, Bali International Convention Centre (BICC), Nusa Dua, Bali, on Monday (20 May).

“The tourism sector is closely intertwined with water. Some people say, ‘No water, no tourism.’ Currently, we have been collaborating on how the tourism sector can maximize the use of water in ways that can be optimized for the people’s welfare. This is our collective responsibility,” he said.

The World Water Forum is an international forum that brings together stakeholders in the water sector. Held every three years since 1997, it invites all parties to discuss, share knowledge, and engage in practical actions for sustainable water resource management and development.

“The World Water Forum is an event for Indonesia to demonstrate its leadership in water management. It also shows how we ensure that water remains an integral part of our lives and that we will continue to preserve it for future generations,” said Minister Sandiaga.

Sandiaga mentioned that the President had stated Indonesia's commitment to continue playing a strategic role and making a significant contribution to global water management. 72 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, but only 1 percent is accessible and can be used for drinking water and sanitation purposes.

“Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to take action, especially considering that Indonesia's territory consists of 65 percent water,” said the minister.

Another concern highlighted by Sandiaga is the utilization of technology, which he mentioned will be a crucial aspect of water management moving forward.

“As Elon Musk, who attended the forum as a prominent speaker, mentioned, technology will increasingly facilitate the management of water and energy to bring about shared prosperity,” said Sandiaga.

The 10th World Water Forum will continue until 25 May. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy/The Tourism and Creative Economy Agency also provides support by organizing various activities, including the World Water Forum Fair and Expo, as well as the Bali Street Carnival.

“We hope that these activities can also promote the culture of Bali and Indonesia to all participants of the World Water Forum, which has reached 20,000 confirmed participants as of this morning. We predict that with the delegation groups, the number will reach almost 40,000 to 50,000, far exceeding the target,” said Minister Sandiaga.
