10th World Water Forum, a Momentum for Indonesia to Study Weather Forecast Management

Indonesia is leveraging the 10th World Water Forum as an opportunity to explore, learn, and develop weather forecast management to deal with extreme climates. This is particularly aimed at mitigating the impact of extreme weather on domestic food security.

This was stated by Special Advisor to the Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) for Water Resources, Firdaus Ali in Jakarta, on Saturday, 27 April 2024.

"We also want to further explore, learn, and develop the role of weather forecast so that we can handle it well," said Firdaus.

Firdaus said that weather and climate are predictable phenomena, unlike earthquakes which cannot be predicted when it will occur and how strong it will be.

Hence, he expressed hope that study in data management and development in weather forecast would help Indonesia to anticipate extreme climates and mitigate impacts in the community.

"So that we can more accurately, better anticipate, in addition to building infrastructure to support management," said Firdaus.

In order to provide a forum for various countries to exchange ideas, Indonesia is proposing the development of  a center of excellence or best practices for water and climate resilience called the Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience (COE).

“Indonesia has the facilities and infrastructure. We need international collaboration and support from donor countries," said Firdaus.

Earlier, Expert Staff of the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) for Technology, Industry, and the Environment, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, said that Indonesia would propose the establishment of a Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience at the 2024 World Water Forum to deal with water management due to climate change.

Endra also highlighted the existence of the Sabo Training Center located in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, which could become part of the COE in the future.

With the development of the Sabo Training Center, Endra believes Yogyakarta can accommodate Southern countries to learn water management and climate resilience.

In addition to the establishment of COE, Indonesia hopes that the forum can produce concrete results regarding mainstreaming integrated water resources management (IWRM) on small islands, as well as the establishment of World Lakes Day.

The world's largest water forum will be held in Bali on 18-25 May and will focus on four aspects: water conservation, clean water and sanitation, food and energy security, and mitigation of natural disasters.

A total of 244 sessions are expected to generate concrete results on the mainstreaming of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) on Small Islands, the establishment of a center of excellence or best practices on Water and Climate Resilience called the Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience (COE), as well as the establishment of World Lakes Day.
