Indonesia Promotes Establishment of World Lake Day at 10th World Water Forum

The Indonesian government is advocating for the establishment of World Lake Day during the 10th World Water Forum in Bali from 18 to 25 May 2024. This proposal is one of the four points that Indonesia brings forward to be adopted as a United Nations (UN) resolution.

This was conveyed by the Deputy Chair of the National Organizing Committee Secretariat of the 10th World Water Forum and Expert Staff to the Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) for Technology, Industry, and Environment, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, on Saturday (27 April).

"We want to propose a World Lake Day through the General Assembly mechanism of the UN, which will be raised as a UN resolution," said Endra.

The need for the establishment of World Lake Day is based on the critical condition of lakes worldwide, including in Indonesia. Lakes, which function as water reservoirs, need to be protected to ensure the availability of water for communities worldwide.

"Our lakes play an extraordinary role as water reservoirs. We work hard to build dams, but we also need to take care of the natural water reservoirs, the lakes," said Endra.

The government has prepared a draft Bali Declaration, which includes Indonesia's targets for concrete follow-up actions after the 10th World Water Forum. These include the establishment of World Lake Day through a UN resolution, the establishment of a Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience, and the mainstreaming of water management issues for developing countries in small island states.

Lastly, the registration of water projects as a Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions, which will be inclusive but voluntary. The Compendium will include a list of projects, initiatives, and collaborations managed by national, regional, and international water stakeholders. Indonesia will also prepare an online platform for the submission process.

Previously,  Chair of the National Organizing Committee for the 10th World Water Forum and Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Mohammad Zainal Fatah, revealed that the ministerial-level declaration is now in the final draft stage and is ready to be presented at the 10th World Water Forum.

"We are at the final draft stage, which they have already agreed upon. At the forum, it will simply be a declaration that this is a shared commitment," Zainal said.

The draft Bali Declaration has been developed through consultations with various parties, including the World Water Council, facilitated by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Indonesian government, together with the World Water Council, has prepared a series of discussion forums leading up to the main event of the 10th World Water Forum. These forums consist of three main processes: political, regional, and thematic. The synergy among these processes is necessary to achieve water for shared prosperity.
