Indonesia's "Hydro-Diplomacy" through 10th World Water Forum

Indonesia is promoting hydro-diplomacy through the organization of the 10th World Water Forum, which will be held in Bali on 18—24 May 2024.

According to Expert Staff to the Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) for Water Resources Firdaus Ali, hydro-diplomacy is a diplomatic approach that focuses on water-related issues by prioritizing persuasive dialogue with solutions, including responding to water resource management problems, equitable distribution of water, and mitigation of water-related disasters.

Firdaus mentioned that hydro-diplomacy also discusses other issues, namely cross-border cooperation and finance that provide mutual benefits related to water.

"Through hydro-diplomacy, Indonesia seeks to facilitate inter-state/inter-governmental dialogue by sharing knowledge, technology, and experience related to water resources management, as well as encouraging synergistic cooperation to resolve water-related conflicts in various regions," he said on Wednesday (24 April).

Some of the concrete cooperation that Indonesia promotes and wants to achieve through hydro-diplomacy and the 10th World Water Forum is sharing and adoption of best practices in water resource management and water-related disaster mitigation and capacity building in sustainable and inclusive water resources management.

Indonesia also encourages investment and new technology in efficient and sustainable water management and strengthening of regional and global cooperation in resolving water-related conflicts and achieving water-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"Indonesia is, of course, very committed to playing an active role in supporting water-related solutions at the global level, and through its participation in the World Water Forum, Indonesia hopes to strengthen collaboration between countries and advance the global water agenda for shared prosperity," said Firdaus.

The World Water Forum is a global water forum held every three years. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically for the organization of the 10th World Water Forum this year, Indonesia was only given around two years to prepare a forum in which participants would discuss various crucial issues related to water.

The 10th World Water Forum's focus will be on discussing four substances: water conservation, clean water and sanitation, food and energy security, and mitigation of natural disasters

A total of 244 sessions in the forum are expected to provide concrete results regarding the mainstreaming of integrated water management for small islands or Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) on Small Islands, the establishment of a center of excellence or best practices for water and climate security or the Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience (COE), as well as the establishment of World Lakes Day.

The Indonesian government invited 43 ambassadors and four international organizations to participate in the 10th World Water Forum and make the event a success. (Yashinta Difa/Razi/Elvira Inda Sari/TR/WS/PR)
