National Education Day: Momentum for Water Education for Young Generation

Indonesian National Education Day, which is celebrated every 2 May, is a momentum for the young generation to bring better change to Indonesia. The younger generation can contribute in many ways, including maintaining the sustainability of water resources.

It was said by the Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono in his statement in Jakarta on Thursday (2 May 2024).

He said that water is the primary source of human life, so its quality must be maintained. In addition, water education from early age is essential. Water education includes sustainable water management, which is vital in the face of climate change.

"The younger generation can discuss with stakeholders to discuss water resources and solutions to maintain clean water," he said

Sustainable water resources management, continued by Basuki, aligns with the theme of the 10th World Water Forum, which will take place in Nusa Dua, Bali, on 18—25 May 2024. "This event is the largest cross-border water forum in the world," he said.

Meanwhile, Communication Ambassador for the 10th World Water Forum, Cinta Laura, said that the younger generation could contribute significantly to maintaining the resilience of water resources from the simplest things, for example, wise daily water use.

The younger generation can also utilize various communication channels and technology to spread messages about clean water conservation, sanitation, and disaster mitigation.

Indonesia's commitment as host of the 10th World Water Forum, he said, was evident considering the country's vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods and droughts, which are exacerbated by climate change.

"I would like to express my appreciation for Indonesia's proactive approach in addressing these urgent problems on a global platform," he said.

Several programs for youth sessions are summarized in the Bali Youth Plan, including the #ShareWaterStories campaign, Youth Podcast: Water Talk, Young Water Sustainability Leaders (YWSL) 2024, Youth Book, and Final Youth Activities.

Meanwhile, YWSL 2024 previously held an Online Boot Camp involving 300 young participants worldwide. Sixty people were selected as young delegates to the 10th World Water Forum. They came from Asia, Africa, Europe, America, and Oceania.

Apart from the Bali Youth Plan, the 10th World Water Forum has set several targets to achieve actual results that can positively impact global water resources management. These targets include establishing a Center of Excellence for Climate and Water Resilience, forming a working group for integrated water resources management on small islands, and inaugurating World Lake Day.
