Bali Introduces the Wisdom of Segara Kerthi to the 10th World Water Forum Delegates

The Bali Provincial Government will introduce the local wisdom of Segara Kerthi and Tumpek Uye to the delegates of the 10th World Water Forum taking place in the Kura-Kura Bali Special Economic Zone (KEK) Beach area in Denpasar City on 18 May 2024.

"In Bali, we have the local wisdom of Segara Kerthi in glorifying water, and this is an opportunity to show it to the world, especially to delegates," said the Head of the Government and Welfare Bureau of the Regional Secretariat of Bali Province, I Ketut Sukra Negara, in Denpasar, Tuesday (30 April).

Bali is hosting the 10th World Water Forum agenda, which will be held in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali, on 18 – 25 May.

Sukra stated that the local wisdom of Segara Kerthi, which means the glorification of water, especially beaches and the sea, originates from the teachings of Hinduism. Segara Kerthi is part of the Sad Kerthi teachings or six noble behaviors to protect the universe.

"With this Segara Kerthi ritual, we, Balinese people, have local wisdom, not only physically but also spiritually," he said.

He added that the Segara Kerthi ritual also coincides with the Holy Day of Tumpek Uye/Tumpek Kandang, celebrated by Hindus every 210 days. Tumpek Uye celebration is a form of gratitude for and glorification of animals that have helped human life.

Therefore, said Sukra, on May 18, the Segara Kerthi ceremony, apart from using Caru Panca Kelud offerings and holding joint prayers, will also include the release of hatchlings and birds as a form of animal glorification.

Three sulinggih (Hindu priests) will lead the Segara Kerthi ritual or ceremony. It will also involve indigenous people in the Serangan Traditional Village. In addition, delegations and other invitees will also be present.

"We have coordinated with the bandesa (leaders) of the Serangan community and will mobilize their traditional communities to make the Segara Kerthi and Tumpek Uye activities a success," he said.

The joint prayer held at 18.00 WITA will be witnessed by delegates from the World Water Forum. Meanwhile, the Segara Kerthi ritual procession will start at 08.00 WITA.

"WWF delegates can also watch several sacred dances that will accompany the Segara Kerthi ceremony," he said.

After completing the group prayer, they will release hatchlings and birds that the Bali Province Environment and Forestry Service has prepared. (Ni Luh Rhismawati, Adi Lazuardi/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/EL/PR)
