Youth from Lampung Awarded Kyoto World Water Grand Prize 2024

Youth Sanitation Concern Coordinator Iffah Rachmi received the Kyoto World Water Grand Prize 2024 organized by the Japan Water Forum in collaboration with the City of Kyoto and the World Water Council. The prize was awarded at the 10th World Water Forum Closing Ceremony at the Bali International Convention Center (BICC), Nusa Dua, Bali, on Friday, 24 May.

Iffah founded Youth Sanitation Concern (YSC) in Lampung in 2018, which actively raises sanitation issues and encourages washing hands with soap and maintaining sanitation facilities. YSC creatively promotes sanitation to attract public attention, especially the young generation.

"This initiative serves as the first step for us to continue working so that water sanitation becomes the mainstream in people's lives," said Iffah when receiving the prize.

The Kyoto World Water Grand Prize is an award for grassroots organizations that contribute to solving water problems in developing countries. This institution provides a prize of 2 million Yen.

"This award is a source of pride and proof that the younger generation can contribute to changing habits in society. We must have more trust and give confidence to the young generation," said Iffah.

The Closing Ceremony concluded the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali. Indonesia, the 10th World Water Forum host, handed over the 11th World Water Forum organization to Saudi Arabia. The 11th Forum will be held in Saudi Arabia in 2027.

The 10th World Water Forum is a series of events that started two years ago, from the National Stakeholder Forum event to the peak of the 10th World Water Forum event held in Bali from 18 to 25 May.

Participants numbering 19,686 people from 160 countries attended the peak event in Bali. 23,718 visitors including participants attended the Expo and Fair held on 20—24 May. The total number of participants and visitors to the forum from 20 to 24 May was around 64,000. For a week, this forum has brought together all stakeholders related to water ranging from governments, parliament members, international organizations, NGOs, private sectors, and the younths.

By President Joko Widodo's mandate, this forum has encouraged solidarity and inclusion between countries and stakeholders, empowered hydro-diplomacy for innovative and concrete collaboration, and strengthened leadership and political commitment.

Indonesia as the host succeeded in submitting the proposal for World Lakes Day, the establishment of a Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience, mainstreaming Integrated Water Resources Management on small islands, and other initiatives. (Yandi/Firda Puri/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/TM/Flow)
