10th World Water Forum to Discuss Political Process for River Basin Authorities on Fifth Day

The 10th World Water Forum enters its fifth day, on Wednesday, 22 May. Several important agendas include the political, regional, and thematic processes. One of the five levels of the political process is related to river and water area authorities.

Today's agenda will discuss the launch of the "Bali Basin Action Agenda" which is expected to provide concrete results in the form of commitments and good practices that support river basin management to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Each country has its water management problems and focuses, so a comprehensive regional approach needs to be taken. Concerning the political process, water management policies will be discussed in stages starting from the implementers through the river authorities to the heads of state," said Mohammad Zainal Fatah, the Secretary-General of Public Works and Housing Ministry and Chair of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum Secretariat.

The high-level panel discussion sessions regarding river basin authorities will take place at two locations, namely the Bali International Convention Center (BICC) and the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Wednesday, 22 May. This political segment will be attended by Indonesian Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono and several ministers in charge of the water sector, including Chinese Water Resources Minister Li Guoying, Egyptian Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam, and Brazilian Integration and Regional Development Minister Waldez Goes.

The same session will also be attended by World Water Council (WWC) President Loïc Fauchon, Moroccan Equipment and Water Minister and International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) President Nizar Baraka, and several high-ranking river basin officials from other countries.

Previously, the 10th World Water Forum adopted a Ministerial Declaration as a concrete result and diplomatic victory for Indonesia. The declaration was ratified at the end of the Ministerial Meeting which was attended by delegates from 106 countries and 27 international organizations.

Apart from the Ministerial Declaration, one of the achievements of this forum was Indonesia's success in compiling a list of major water-related projects of various countries. This list contains 113 projects worth US$9.4 billion, including projects to accelerate the provision of drinking water for 3 million households and domestic wastewater management projects for 300,000 households, which will greatly benefit communities in various countries.
